Linking individual care with prevention, epidemiology and community health systems.
Department of Community Medicine
The Department of Community Medicine broadens the student's perspective from individual treatment to population health. The department deals with the evolution of medicine, concepts of health and disease, epidemiology, screening, communicable and non-communicable disease prevention, environmental health, nutrition, maternal and child health, demography, family welfare, health education, occupational health, biostatistics and national health programmes. Students also study the organisation of health services and the roles of primary, secondary and tertiary care. Field exposure and surveys help them understand social determinants, sanitation, water quality, community behaviour and the practical design of health-promotion activities. The department encourages evidence-based prevention and prepares graduates to contribute to outreach, public-health education and multidisciplinary community programmes.
